How To Create An Engaged Workforce

People are the hardest of all business assets. They need to be happy with the job but at the same time, have a strong bond with the company that they will be willing to do more than their job description specifies. This is what it means tom have an engaged workforce. Here are some tips that may not be as easy to adopt because it demands a commitment from both employer and employee.

First of all, there has to be mutual respect. Once this is gone, it’s very hard to build it up again. One way to start respecting your workers is by recognizing their talent and skill. Don’t talk down to them, but treat with respect and honor. You will be setting the example.

The second is to know when to draw the line. It’s okay to joke around with your workforce as long as you retain a distance. You cannot let it get to a point where they start to feel that you’re their drinking buddy or someone who should never tell them off.

Third, recognize the cultural and social diversity you may have among your staff. Let everyone know that no one is superior to the other because of race, religion, or accent. One unhappy employee can bring down your business in so many ways. He can delay work, misrepresent the company, or commit illegal acts that could bring down your company. Also, if you are uncomfortable with someone, then don’t hire that person because your demeanor will be the benchmark for how others will treat that person. But at the same time, know that it is not right to disregard a person because of race, gender, or creed.

Fourth, when a person excels in a task, give credit. A few kind words go a long especially if done in front of other employees. Be a bit on the sparse side when complimenting anyone because if said too often, it loses its impact.

Fifth, give bonuses over and above what is dictated by law if the person deserves it. However, be clear that it is performance bonus which means it relies on the performance during the entire year and there’s a clean slate when January rolls around.

Finally, promote growth and teamwork to create a cohesive force that won’t bicker and stab each other in the back.
