It does not matter if we are talking about fancy or expensive jewelry because the tools are the same as is the method. For instance to make holes, you will need a tool for precision punching. There are different kinds of precision punching tools because there are different gauges to make different hole sizes. Other tools would be the mounter and mini hand tools, among others.

However, before anything is worked on, there must be a vision and then a design. Jewelers need to be able to express their art in hard copies so that it becomes easier to execute.

Next comes the compilation of raw materials like the precious metal and stones. The most often used manual method in making jewelry is known as lost wax casting. It’s a centuries-old method that has survived through the year because it’s something that is passed down generation to generation.

The method used wax, which is pliable to create the basic shape of the jewelry. Then, this wax sculpture goes through a process of being encased in plaster, left to harden and dry before cooking in a very hot oven. Inside the oven, the wax melts away, leaving the plaster behind. This becomes the basic mold. A small hole is bore into the plaster and the precious metal like gold, platinum or silver is injected. The metal takes the place of the wax. Once the metal cools down, the plaster is cracked and removed to reveal the piece of unadorned jewelry.

If it is a plain piece of jewelry, then this is the finished product after polishing is done. If not, more work is done. Holes can be created or indents for the precious stones to decorate the jewelry. In the case of fine jewelry, the stones have clasps to keep them in place. For fashion jewelry, heavy-duty glue is used. Then the piece is polished and displayed.
